ANTEFIX DESIGNED AS THE HEAD OF A WOMAN

Etruscan, probably Sicily, late 6th century B.C.
Polychrome-painted terracotta, with remnants of black paintwork. Female head with archaic smile and curly, wavy hair. On a later stone plinth.
H without plinth 15.5 cm.


Minor chips.

Provenance: Elsa Bloch-Diener, Berne, 18 February 1999.

With a copy of an accompanying letter from Prof. Jucker (Berne, 1 May 1981), in which reference is made to a similar item (depicted in: A. Andrén, Architectural Terracottas from Etrusco-Italic Temples (1939), pl. 9.29). The antefix on offer is depicted under No. E56 in an inventory by Elsa Bloch-Diener.
