Wilhelm Egon Wiedemann was born in Munich in 1905. After his work was deemed degenerate art and he became a victim of sanctions, he fled to Colombia.
His first exhibition in his new homeland was held in 1940, which was an immediate success.
Over the following decades, he managed to become one of the country’s most significant artists. He was heavily influenced by his tropical surroundings and his depictions became increasingly non-representational. As you can see from our wonderful painting, his abstracts are derived from wild, rainforest landscapes. We see a mother and her child amid an impressive scenery of large, sturdy trees. The inscription in the bottom right probably refers to Melgar, a town just outside Bogotá, which today is a popular recreation area for residents of the big city.
