This gouache from 1991, for example, is part of a series of different formats and colour arrangements. In the upper third of the sheet the artist has placed a square in a dominant black frame, which is then divided into four further squares. Each of the squares is characterised by a striking, muted colour scheme, which LeWitt contrasts with meticulous lines. The lines of the lower colour fields seem to move dynamically towards each other, almost breaking through the black borders that seem to preserve a sense of order in the composition. In this way, a work has been created that is both structured and imbued with momentum.
