A SIDEBOARD,

known as a "commode à porte avec tiroirs à l'anglaise", Directoire/Empire, attributed to JACOB FRERES RUE MESLEE (collaboration between George II and François Honoré George Jacob, 1796-1803) , Paris c. 1800/03.
Flame mahogany. The front with double-doors. Fitted interior with 4 drawers "à l'anglaise". Rich, matte and polished gilt bronze mounts and applications. "Carrara" marble top. Veneer supplements on the doors, later profile moulding on the cornice.
148x65x92 cm.

Provenance:
- formerly the Collection Grogniot & Joniel, Paris.
- from a highly important German private collection.

The present commode, described as signed, is illustrated in C. Massin, Meubles et Ensembles d'Epoque Directoire et Empire, Paris 1965; p. 43 (Ill. 53).
