There are a total of 15 figures from the Italian comedy that were commissioned in 1743 by Johann Adolph II Duke of Weissenfels in Meissen. The Duke's second marriage was to Friederika of Sachsen-Gotha, and thus for family reasons he also become a porcelain lover. He ordered a full series of the Italian comedians in 1743, and Reinicke, a colleague of Kändler's, modelled them over the course of the next two years under the eyes of his boss. The graphic models for the figures were copperplate engravings by François Joulain, based on Riccoboni's "Histoire du Théâtre Italien", published in 1728 in Paris (H. Backer, Kömödienfiguren der Sammlung Schneider, KFS 50, 1960, p. 60).
