The motif of the allée occupies an important position within Max Liebermann's landscapes, as hardly any other artist has devoted himself to this topic with such intensity. In the present work, Liebermann fuses light and shadow, light reflections and the colorful atmosphere into a pulsating composition, transforming the avenue into a sublime and almost sacred place. Sunrays in places shine through the dense treetops; The arrangement and the impressive height of the trees are reminiscent of the pointed arches of Gothic cathedrals. The perspectively aligned avenue, complemented by the rich green of the pastel colors, gives the painting an impressive illusion of depth. The people walking along the avenue or sitting at the table seem almost fine details. However, they are not only used to create scale, but also set the tone decisively. The work offered in this auction is a particularly impressive pastel that stands out from many of Liebermann's pastel works due to its size and detailed workmanship.
