The present drawing is the preparatory figure study of the lamenting Mary Magdalene under the cross of Christ, which Charles-Joseph Natoire designed in 1737 for his engraving "Consummatum est" executed by Benoît Audran the Younger (1698-1772) (see: Philadelphia Museum of Art, inv. no. 1985-52-36745).
