ENAMEL CANDLESTICK WITH COAT OF ARMS CARTOUCHE

Limoges, in the style of the 16th century, from the 19th century. Monogrammed J.R. (probably Julien Robillard, active ca. 1850–1880).
Polychrome enamel with gold drawing on copper. Square drip pan and fluted shaft on a square plinth. Partially raised vine and lily decoration and crowned monogram DHD (Diane and Henry de Poitiers). Monogram J.R. on the foot. The foot features four medallions depicting Cephalus, Aurora, Adonis, and a family crest. Black enamel with monogram J.R. at the bottom of the base.
H 22.5 cm, base 15 × 15 cm.

A comparable candlestick featuring the same four cartouches is stored in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (Inv. No. EM 4-1). Another example featuring the same family crest, which according to Véronique Notin can be attributed to the Nieaud family, can be found in Susanne Netzer: Maleremails from Limoges, Der Bestand des Berliner Kunstgewerbemuseums. Berlin, 1999, p. 134. Contrary to this statement, the family crest has been identified as that of Guiomar de Kerbalance, as described in Lot No. of the Sotheby's auction in Paris on 22 October 2008.
