PORTAL CLOCK FEATURING PALLAS ATHENA
Louis XVI, Paris, ca. 1780. The dial signed 'Piolaine à Paris' (Michel-François Piolaine, 1765 - ca. 1810, maître 1787).
White and black marble and gilt bronze. Cylindrical clock case, the top featuring Athena wearing a helmet and holding a shield, flanked by two pilasters designed as fasces ending in an armillary sphere and a globe. In the center, a seated lion. Gilt bronze applications, designed as weapon medallions, as symbols of Victory. White enamel dial with the hours in Arabic numerals. Movement with anchor escapement, striking the 1/2-hour on bell. The pendulum, relief-decorated with the face of Apollo. 1 key.
50 × 19 × 62.5 cm.
The motif of Pallas Athena as the Goddess of Victory and Peace was very popular at the time. It can be found on various comparable portal clocks from the Louis XVI era, which differ in the design of the pilasters and the bases.
