SIDE TABLE WITH A RED LACQUER TOP IN THE "GOÛT JAPONAIS"
Régence, France, ca. 1720.
Molded wood, carved with shells, palmettes, scrolls, latticework, flowers, and acanthus leaves, and gilt. Red-lacquered top with a depiction of a riverscape and ships, as well as with a group of figures in the "goût japonais" with silver scattered lacquer and gold. Rectangular top on a cut-out frame with one drawer, on curved legs with hoof feet. Bottom with label Fondazione Pietro Accorsi Torino.
51.5 × 38.5 × 67 cm.
Various losses. The top with a repaired crack. The frame slightly repaired.
Provenance:
- Michel Meyer Paris (oral tradition).
- Aristocratic private collection, Southern Germany, bought at an auction.
The shape and design of the lacquered top suggest that it was made to measure for the table of offer, rather than being a repurposing of a pre-existing lacquer element. The artistic design suggests an Asian origin, since the European influences evident in French lacquer work are absent. Since the Japanese market was not accessible to the European powers at that time, it is reasonable to assume that the top is a work ordered and executed in China in the early 18th century, with the intention of imitating the Japanese style.
