Japan, 19th century, H 6.9 cm.
Ivory with engraved, blackened details. The Portuguese explorer and writer in traditional clothing and with a kirin (mythical animal) on a leash. The inscription on the reverse records the sailor's arrival in Japan on the 5th day of the 7th month of the 8th year of Tenmon (1539). Signed Shusai.
