A RESSEI MENPO (ARMOUR HALF MASK)
Japan, Edo period, 18th c.
Red lacquered iron mask with a fierce expression (ressei) with detachable nose, showing wrinkles on cheeks and mouth corners. The moustache made of hair and the wide mouth with gilded teeth emphasise the expression.
Provenance: Swiss private collection, purchased from Giuseppe Piva, Milan in January 2020 (with certificate).
