The multi-figure village fair painting offered here, executed after 1575, is an outstanding example of the genre with which Gillis Mostaert remains particularly associated today. The Antwerp artist was distinguished by exceptional versatility and inventiveness. He painted staffage figures for landscapes by Jacob Grimmer (1525/26–1590), village scenes in the tradition of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (circa 1525–1569), and also produced versions of compositions after Hieronymus Bosch (circa 1450–1516). Mostaert was particularly valued, however, for his landscapes and depictions of village fairs and markets.

The present painting combines in an impressive manner the vitality, narrative potential and delight in detail that already made such works highly sought after by contemporary collectors and continue to account for their particular appeal today. A comparable example is in the National Gallery Prague (cf. Market Scene, oil on panel, 41 × 68.5 cm, inv. no. DO 4237; see RKD images no. 114225).
