In 1939 Hermann Max Pechstein was in Germany. He was living in Berlin at the time, although he was increasingly isolated under the National Socialist regime due to the political situation and their classifying his art as "degenerate". During this time, Pechstein painted mainly in his Berlin studio. Although Pechstein's artistic activity was severely limited, he had the opportunity to exhibit some of his works in June 1939. The Galerie von der Heyde in Berlin hosted a Pechstein exhibition with paintings, watercolors and drawings by the artist. In a letter to Alexander Gerbig, Pechstein wrote that the younger audience in particular enjoyed the works and that he was even able to sell some. Thanks to the money he earned there, he could now imagine returning to the rural town of Nidden. On June 13th, words were finally followed by actions and Pechstein traveled to Nidden, where he spent a few weeks.

During these summer weeks on the Curonian Spit the painting “Summer Evening in the Dunes” was created. The town, which had been one of Pechstein's favorite subjects since the 1920s and impressed him with its natural beauty, continued to fascinate the artist. In the present painting, Pechstein skillfully manages to capture the warm evening sun, which is reflected by the pale sand of the dunes, creating an atmospheric landscape.
