MANTEL CLOCK “ALLEGORY OF STUDY”

Empire, Paris, ca.1815. The dial signed Le Roy H.r. du Roi à Paris (probably Bazile-Charles Le Roy, 1765–1839). The case is probably based on a model by Pierre-Victor Ledure (1783–1870).
Gilt bronze. Architectural case in the form of a high altar, flanked by the standing Allegory of Study with a scroll in her hand and a stack of books. Decorative applications in the form of torches, mesh, rosettes, and a rooster. The stepped base features a relief depicting a genius and a seated, winged allegorical figure holding a book in her hand, inscribed Traité de la Sphère, as well as other symbols of study. White enamel dial with Roman hours. 2 blued, openwork hands. Parisian movement with half-hour strike on bell. The movement plate is marked and numbered C1041 and 913 P on the back. Two keys.
33.5 × 12.5 × 54.5 cm.
Movement requires revision. Back glass is missing. Gilding is slightly rubbed.

An almost identical model is depicted in Elke Niehüser: "Die französische Bronzeuhr. Eine Typologie der figürlichen Darstellungen." Munich 1997, pp. 76/77, figs. 114 & 115. According to Ottomeyer/Pröschel, the design for the case is by Pierre-Victor Ledure (cf. Ottomeyer/Pröschel: "Vergoldete Bronzen". Munich 1986, p. 349, No. 5.6.8).
