SADO ISHO NINGYO (COSTUME PUPPET FROM SADO ISLAND)
Japan, around 1700, H 29.3 cm.
Wood, head and hands are coated in gofun (white pigment derived from shellfish), the hair in black lacquer, and the robe is made of silk brocade. A rare doll closely associated with the theatrical tradition of Sado Island. A few minor damages.
Provenance: Ex collection of Jeffrey Montgomery, Lugano, by repute, acquired from The Gallery in Tokyo. Certificate no. 9089 dated 11.09.1982 is available.
