Literature:
A rare and important work signed by J. B. Schmidt, painted during his period at Fulda (probably 1741–48) after an engraving by Raphael Sadeler (Venice, 1598).
P. Ducret presented this plaque as an exceptionally rare work by Schmidt that is both signed and dated ("Keramos" 76/1977, p. 31).
Johann Bernhard Schmidt entered the service of the Fulda faience manufactory in 1741, the same year in which Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck joined the newly established manufactory. He evidently adapted to Löwenfinck’s style and its characteristic early Asian-inspired decoration, as demonstrated by a lidded vase signed "Fuld. J. B. Schmidt" and bearing the arms of Prince-Abbot Amand von Buseck, the founder of the manufactory (Museum Hamburg).
Schmidt signed several works in Fulda with his monogram. The most striking is a wall sconce from the Stift Wallenstein in Fulda depicting Fulda Cathedral and signed "F/J.B.S.", making it, as Ducret observed, one of Schmidt’s rare figural paintings.
Schmidt must have been an important mainstay of the manufactory, particularly after Löwenfinck’s departure in 1744 and until the arrival of another important faience painter, Joseph Philipp Dannhöfer, in 1751.
