The French Orientalist Zacharie Charles Landelle is known for his portraits and figure paintings. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under the history painter Paul Delaroche (1797–1856) and the gifted portraitist Ary Scheffer (1795–1858), initially practising by copying Old Masters in the Louvre. To earn a living, he began painting portraits, which attracted widespread interest and were presented in his first exhibition at the Salon of 1841, where they drew the attention of King Louis-Philippe I (1773–1850). He was soon appointed official court painter. From 1865 onwards, he undertook several journeys to the Orient and North Africa.

Landelle's figure paintings are characterised by an emotionally expressive manner, as is also evident in the present composition. This portrait of an Armenian woman, a smaller version of the painting in the Wallace Collection in London (inv. no. P278), is impressive for its precise execution. The two paintings differ only slightly, for example in details of the jewellery and clothing. Both paintings were probably created in Paris from models wearing costumes, before Landelle had visited the Middle East.
