Tom Wesselmann ist ein amerikanischer Pop Art Künstler, der mit seinen weiblichen Akten Bekanntheit erlangt. Er studiert zunächst an der University of Cincinnati Psychologie, welches er 1954 abschliesst. Nach seinem Abschluss bleibt Wesselmann in Ausbildung – er beginnt eine Ausbildung an der Kunstakademie von Cincinnati und erzielt auch erste Erfolge, als er seine ersten Zeichentrickfilmstreifen an die Zeitschriften „1000 Jokes and True“ verkauft. Ab 1956 setzt er sein Studium an der Cooper Union in New York fort und schliesst dieses 1959 ab. Ein Besuch im MoMA und ein dort ausgestelltes Motherwell Gemälde inspirieren und lösen eine erste ästhetische Erfahrung in ihm aus. Kurze Zeit später gründet er zusammen mit Jim Dine und Marcus Ratliff im Stadtviertel Greenwich Village die Judson Gallery, die zu einem Treffpunkt der Avantgarde wird.

Seine Karriere wie auch die erste Einzelausstellung in der Tanager Gallery hat ihren Auftakt 1961 mit der Serie „Great American Nude“. Inspiriert von der Bildsprache amerikanischer Werbungen, zeichnet sich die Serie durch matte, aber kraftvolle Farbgebung aus. Prägend für Wesselmanns Serien sind weibliche Akte in sexueller Provokation, zu denen auch die grossformatigen „Great American Nudes“ zählen.Wie auch Jim Dine grenzt sich Wesselmann gegen die Pop Art ab. Seine Werke veranschaulichen das Experimentieren mit unterschiedlichen Materialien und, durch Zusammenführen von Alltagsgegenständen wie Wasserhähnen oder Seifenschalen, das Entstehen von plastischen Collagen.Seit 1983 schafft Wesselmann auch Aktfiguren und Stillleben aus Metall, indem er seine Zeichnungen auf Metallplatten überträgt und mit einem Laserstrahl aus diesen ausschneidet. Neben diesen Collagen entwickelt er Robert Rauschenbergs Assemblage Technik weiter.Wesselmann lebt und arbeitet bis zu seinem Tod am 17. Dezember 2004 weiter in New York.
