Julian Opie wird 1958 in London geboren und studiert dort zwischen 1979 und 1982 am Goldsmiths College. Bereits nach dem Studium 1983, beginnt er aus Stahlblech verschiedene geometrische, farbige Figuren zu formen und zu kombinieren. Im gleichen Jahr findet seine erste Ausstellung in der Lisson Gallery in London statt. Die Stahlobjekte werden auch auf der documenta 8 im Jahr 1984 gross gefeiert. Es folgen zahlreiche Ausstellungen in renommierten Galerien und Museen wie der Biennale in Venedig 1993 und der Tate Britain 2000.

1997 beginnt er seine heute so berühmte Porträtserie mit den reduzierten Gesichtszügen in schwarzen Konturlinien, die jedoch trotz der Reduzierung auf das Wesentliche, die charakteristischen Merkmale der Person beibehalten. Später kombiniert er diese minimalistischen Figuren dann mit Animation, und bewegte Figuren werden so auf grossen Bildschirmen und Displays gezeigt, oder auch als riesige LED-Kunstwerke. Julian Opie lebt und arbeitet in London.
