Roy Lichtenstein wird am 27. Oktober 1923 in Manhattan als Sohn einer jüdischen Familie geboren. Die Privatschule, die er zunächst besucht, bietet keinen Kunstunterricht an, und so malt er in seiner Freizeit. 1939 besucht er Kurse der Art Students League; geprägt durch seinen Lehrer Reginald Marsh widmet er sich Strassenszenen und Modellen. 1940 schreibt er sich an der School of Fine Arts der Ohio State University in New York ein, wo er im Stil des Expressionismus malt. Gedrängt von seinen Eltern erlangt er das Lehrerdiplom. Zwischen 1943 und 1945 leistet Lichtenstein seinen Militärdienst in Europa. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Paris kehrt er in die Staaten zurück und schliesst 1946 sein Studium ab. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit beginnt er einen Masterstudiengang. Nach dem Abschluss und dem Verlust seiner Dozentenstelle zieht Lichtenstein mit seiner ersten Frau 1951 nach Cleveland, wo er als grafischer und technischer Zeichner arbeitet. Seine erste Einzelausstellung findet 1959/60 in der Thirty Gallery statt. 1957 erhält er eine Assistenzprofessur an der New State University, Oswego.

Mitte der 1950er Jahre sucht er zusehends nach einem eigenen Stil, der bis dahin noch stark vom Abstrakten Expressionismus geprägt ist. Der Durchbruch gelingt ihm mit der Bekanntschaft Allan Kaprows, der ihn wiederum mit Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, John Cage, etc. bekannt macht. Alltagsgegenstände als Motiv erhalten Einzug in Roy Lichtensteins Werk und somit, nach einigem Experimentieren, der Comic und damit verbunden die Sprechblase. Ein weiteres Stilmittel ist das Close-Up. Seinen künstlerischen Durchbruch erlebt er 1961 mit dem Gemälde "Look Mickey"; im selben Jahr stellt er seine Werke dem renommierten Galeristen Leo Castelli vor, der ihn sofort in seine Galerie aufnimmt. Der Erfolg lässt nicht lange auf sich warten, und so kann Lichtenstein bereits 1962 von seiner Kunst leben. Neben den Comics werden auch technische Innovationen wie die Waschmaschine zu Motiven, denn er will Kunst und Kommerz miteinander verbinden und sich gegen die "Abgehobenheit" der Kunst wenden."… Pop Art sieht hinaus in die Welt, sie scheint ihre Umgebung zu akzeptieren, die nicht gut oder schlecht ist, aber anders – eine andere geistige Haltung." Mitte der 1960er Jahre kommen dann auch vermehrt Abstraktionen vor, in den 1970ern setzt er sich zum einen mit optischen Täuschungen auseinander und andererseits spielt er mit Ikonen der Kunstgeschichte wie Claude Monet. Expressionismus und Kubismus finden sich dann in den Motiven der 80er Jahre wieder.

Nicht nur durch seine Motive, sondern auch durch seine Technik der Benday Dots, sind Roy Lichtensteins Werke unverkennbar. Er ersetzt dabei Farbflächen durch gleichmässige Farbpunkte. Seine Farbpalette wird bestimmt durch klare und kräftige und gleichzeitig reduzierte Farben. Er experimentiert mit Gemälden, Collagen, Druckgrafiken, Skulpturen und Keramiken.

1997 stirbt Roy Lichtenstein in New York. Seine Witwe gründet die Lichtenstein Foundation, in die ca. 800 Werke, Schriftstücke und sein Archiv eingehen. Seit 2018 befindet sich die Foundation in einer stufenweisen Selbstauflösung; etwa die Hälfte der Werke soll ans Whitney Museum of American Art gehen, das Archiv ans Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

Lichtenstein nimmt 1968 und 1977 an der documenta in Kassel teil. 1995 wird ihm der Kyoto-Preis verliehen, 1996 wird er Ehrenprofessor der George Washington University, Washington. Mit Andy Warhol gehört er zu den prägenden Persönlichkeiten der Pop Art.
