Günther Uecker wird am 13. März 1930 in Wendorf in Deutschland geboren. Uecker wächst auf der Halbinsel Wustrow auf, wo sein Vater als Ingenieur der Luftfahrtindustrie angestellt ist. Nach der Schulzeit folgt eine Lehre als Anstreicher und Schreiner, daraufhin studiert Uecker bis 1953 Malerei, zunächst in Wismar, dann an der Kunstakademie in Berlin-Weissensee. 1951 ergibt sich für Uecker erstmals die Gelegenheit nach Westberlin zu gehen und somit in Kontakt mit abstrakter Kunst zu kommen. 1953 übersiedelt er nach einem Aufstand nach Westberlin, wo er sich mit Religion und Philosophie auseinandersetzt; beides zeigt sich später einflussreich in seinem Werk.

Uecker setzt 1955 – 1957 sein Studium an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Otto Pankok fort, im selben Jahr entstehen seine ersten, heute für ihn typischen, Nagelbilder: dreidimensionale, weiss bemalte Reliefs aus Nägeln, die durch Ausrichtung der Nägel und das Wechselspiel von Licht und Schatten eine eigene Dynamik entwickeln. 1961 wird Uecker Mitglied in der von Heinz Mack und Otto Piene gegründeten Künstlergruppe ZERO und ist mit Gerhard Richter für die Inszenierung der Demonstration "Museen können bewohnbare Ort sein" zuständig.

970 ist der Künstler als deutscher Vertreter auf der Biennale in Venedig präsent, Anfang der 1970er Jahre folgen Arbeitsaufenthalte in Südamerika, Afrika und Asien sowie in den 1980ern in Japan, Sibirien, China, Island und der Mongolei. Uecker thematisiert seit dieser Zeit ebenso politische Fragen in seinen Werken, wie zum Beispiel in seinem Zyklus "Aschebilder", ein Echo auf die Katastrophe von Tschernobyl. 1974 – 1995 unterrichtet er als Professor an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, gestaltet 1999 den Andachtsraum im neuen Reichstagsgebäude in Berlin und begründet 2008 die Stiftung "Zero foundation" mit.

Uecker lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf und St. Gallen.
