We are grateful to Dr. Wolfgang Schulz for his examination of this painting in the original and for his suggestion that the watermill very exactly reproduces the depiction in the painting by Hobbema's hand in The Hague, Mauritshuis (Inv. No. 584). Schulz draws further comparison to the composition of the painting by Meindert Hobbema in the Toledo Museum, formerly the TenCate collection, which shows the watermill on the right and the view with path on the left. He also takes into consideration that the present painting may be either a late work by Hobbema or a close re-creation by Jan Looten.
