MARBLE FRAGMENT DEPICTING ANIMALS FIGHTING,Roman, 1st half of the 3rd century AD. White marble. Slightly rounded shape, depicting a lion preying on a gazelle. H 23 cm. W 30 cm. Provenance: - Former estate of J.P. Mariaud de Serres, Paris. - Auction D. Cahn, Basel, 9.11.2013 (Lot No. 262). - Private collection, Switzerland. The fragment on offer is an element from a child's sarcophagus.

Beim hier angebotenen Fragment handelt es sich um ein Element eines Kindersarkophages. Es offenbart die beliebten Motive nachseverischer Sarkophage: die Siegessymbolik des Löwen, die apotropäische Funktion sowie die allgemeine Beliebtheit solcher Kampfszenen im römischen Alltag. Die Datierung solcher Fragmente basiert auf der Physiognomie und Mähnengestaltung des Löwen.
