The fragment on offer is an element from a child's sarcophagus.

Weisser Marmor. Leicht gerundete Form mit Darstellung eines Löwen, eine Gazelle erbeutend. H 23 cm. B 30 cm.

Provenienz: - Ehemals Nachlass J.P. Mariaud de Serres, Paris. - Auktion D. Cahn, Basel, 9.11.2013 (Katalognr. 262). - Privatsammlung, Schweiz. Beim hier angebotenen Fragment handelt es sich um ein Element eines Kindersarkophages. Es offenbart die beliebten Motive nachseverischer Sarkophage: die Siegessymbolik des Löwen, die apotropäische Funktion sowie die allgemeine Beliebtheit solcher Kampfszenen im römischen Alltag. Die Datierung solcher Fragmente basiert auf der Physiognomie und Mähnengestaltung des Löwen.
