Lot 1183 - A200 Decorative Arts - Thursday, 31. March 2022, 10.00 AM

RARE PAIR OF PAINTED AND CARVED COMMODES

Rococo, probably Piedmont or Veneto ca. 1750/60.
Pinewood, carved with flower garlands and leaves, polychrome painted on a mint-green background and parcel-gilt. Green marbled top. Front with two drawers. Bronze handles. 1 key.
97 × 51 × 81 cm.

Cracks and losses and old repairs. One escutcheon and one lock are missing.

A rare pair of commodes in an attractive, almost untouched condition. Painted furniture was made in the "Barocchetto" period in various regions of Italy; especially the items of furniture made in Venice are well-known. The carved floral decoration is found mainly in Venetian furniture (see Carla Santini. Le Lacche dei Veneziani. 2003. Ill 34), whereas the commode on offer has a somewhat different design, since it lacks the excessive rounding that is typical of Venice. This leads us to assume that the commode on offer was made in the Veneto.
