The lot on offer belongs to an extensive set of 870 plates in silver and silver-gilt, made between 1900 and 1916 by the most renowned goldsmiths at the Prussian Court - Gebrüder Friedländer, Wagner & Sohn and D. Vollgold & Sohn - for the House of Hohenzollern. A large part of the delivery was made in 1913, when two major events were meant to be celebrated by the Prussian royal family, i.e. the marriage of Viktoria Luise, the Emperor's only daughter, to Duke Ernst August zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg on 24 May, as well as the 25th anniversary of the Emperor's accession to the throne.

The design of these plates goes back to the Wedding Service "after English forms" made by Johann George Hossauer (1794-1874) for Prince William of Prussia and Marie Luise Augusta Katharine of Saxe-Weimar in 1829 (cf.
