This detailed depiction of a doctor at consultation is a charkateristic example of the work of the Haarlem painter Hendrick Heerschop. The composition is known in a second version in his own hand, which is in the Mauritshuis in The Hague (inv. no. 801, oil on panel, signed and dated 1668 in the book, 53 × 43.5 cm). The spatial design, the vivid lighting and the multifaceted motifs make this scene appear particularly atmospheric.
