Jan Brueghel the Elder (also called Velvet Brueghel or Flower Brueghel), was a successful Flemish painter and, along with Rubens, one of the most respected painters of the early 17th century. As the son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (called Peasant Brueghel) and younger brother of Pieter Brueghel the Younger, he was part of an important dynasty of painters. At an early age Jan Brueghel the Elder travelled via Cologne to Italy, where he is known to have lived in Milan and Rome from 1590 to 1595. In Rome he became friends with the landscape painter Paul Bril. Like Bril, he worked together with Johannes Rottenhammer, who added figural elements to his paintings. After Jan Brueghel the Elder returned to Flanders, he was admitted to the Antwerp painters' guild as a master's son in 1597. In 1601/1602 he was appointed dean. In 1604 he undertook a journey to Prague and subsequently worked for the Brussels court of the governors, the Archduke and Duchess Albrecht and Isabella, where his presence is first documented in 1606. Jan Brueghel the Elder's works include numerous landscape paintings of captivating quality, mostly with small staffage figures enlivening the expansive landscape scene, which may also depict biblical or historical subjects. He is also famous for his meticulous flower paintings. Furthermore, he painted numerous mythological paintings and allegories.
