BUVELOT, LOUIS
Morges 1814–1888 Victoria
Louis Buvelot, a Swiss-born landscape painter, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lausanne and travelled to Brazil in 1840, where he exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rio. In 1865 he emigrated to Australia. There he made a name for himself as a pioneer of Australian landscape painting, of which he became the main representative.
The effect of light in particular, as well as the topographical and atmospheric realism of his works, were praised by art critics, who compared his work with that of the Barbizon School.
