COROT, JEAN-BAPTISTE CAMILLE

1796 Paris 1875

Focussed primarily on capturing light and atmospheric phenomena, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, the founding father of 19th century landscape painting, laid the foundations for a new artistic understanding of landscape painting. On his numerous journeys, he was repeatedly drawn to Italy, from where he brought back drawings and oil sketches, which served as the basis for the compositions he later created in his studio. Using a flowing brushstroke and bright colours, the expression of mood and atmosphere is prioritised over topographical details.
Born in Paris in 1796, the artist is considered one of the most important French painters of his time. His work directly carried out in the open air, including the area around Rouen and Paris, but also in the forests of Barbizon near Fontainebleau, was to inspire his entire oeuvre. He made his first trip to Italy in 1825 and returned there again and again in the following years. His works also had a particularly strong influence on his fellow artists of the Barbizon School, including Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878) and Théodore Rousseau (1812–1867).
