HOVE, BARTHOLOMEUS JOHANNES VAN
1790 Den Haag 1880
Bart van Hove was born in The Hague in 1790 and was one of the leading painters of the Dutch Romantic period. He was initially taught in his home town by his father and the decorative painter Johannes H.A.A. Breckenheijmer (1722–1856). Later, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Among his pupils were Johannes Bosboom (1817–1891), Charles Leickert (1816–1907), Salomon Leonardus. Verveer (1813–1876) and his son Hubertus van Hove (1814–1865). His focus was always on dreamlike townscapes combining fantasy with actual topographical features.
