KLUYVER, PIETER LODEWIJK FRANCISCO

1816 Amsterdam 1900

Pieter Lodewijk Kluyver's oeuvre is characterised by extremely precise and intensely atmospheric summer and winter landscapes. The subtleties of nature are emphasised by a fine brushstroke and a harmonious colour palette, enlivened by staffages of cattle and figures. Using impressive lighting effects, Kluyver depicted different landscapes around Arnhem, Amersfoort, The Hague, Haarlem and Amsterdam, continuing the long tradition of Dutch landscape painting, which in the 17th century was represented by the major figure Jacob van Ruisdael (1629–1681).
