MORGENSTERN,CHRISTIAN

Hamburg 1805–1867 Munich

Born in Hamburg, Christian Morgenstern was one of the most important exponents of early German Realism. He gained his first artistic experience as an employee in the graphic workshop of the Suhr brothers in Hamburg, where he was particularly encouraged to produce views and panoramic scenes. On the recommendation of the art scholar Carl Friedrich von Rumohr (1785–1843), he went to Copenhagen in 1827 to study at the Academy of Arts. He was part of the group of North German and Scandinavian painters who brought to Munich the progressive practice of open-air painting which they had learned at the Copenhagen academy, and who strongly influenced the development of realistic landscape painting in Munich. The close friendship he cultivated with his fellow painters, Carl Rottmann (1797–1850) and Eduard Schleich (1812–1874), resulted in a reciprocal artistic relationship. On trips to the Elass, Northern Italy and Venice, he produced numerous studies, which later served as models for his exhibition paintings when he returned to his studio.
