WINTERHALTER, FRANZ XAVER

Menzenschwand 1805–1873 Frankfurt

Franz Xaver Winterhalter is one of the most renowned portrait painters of the 19th century. He produced a large number of portraits for aristocratic personalities, including the British, Spanish and Austrian royal families, as well as the French royal court. Winterhalter's connections to aristocratic society were already established in his youth. When Winterhalter was at school in St Blasien in Baden-Württemberg, Grand Duke Ludwig I became aware of his artistic talent and offered him a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. This was followed by positions as drawing teacher to Sophie von Baden (1801–1865) and as court painter to Grand Duke Leopold (1790–1852), as well as various journeys and stays abroad, which earned Winterhalter international admiration. His great popularity as a portrait painter was due not only to his technical precision but also the flattering way in which he depicted his models. He captured the particular characteristics of the sitter and rendered them in a benevolent and particularly aesthetic manner, in which the dress fashions of the time serve as important elements.
