BONALUMI, AGOSTINO

* 10.7.1935 Vimercate, † 18.9.2013 Monza

The Italian painter and sculptor Agostino Bonalumi, an outstanding figure of the Italian avant-garde and close associate of the German artist group Zero, was born in Vimercate on 10 July 1935. As one of the most important exponents of 20th century abstract art, he explored the three-dimensionality of the canvas in his object paintings and contributed to the development of irregularly shaped canvases in the post-war period. At the age of just 13, he exhibited his figurative works in his home town. Despite his artistic talent, he was denied the opportunity of studying art. Instead, he studied technical design and succeeded in teaching himself painting at the same time. As early as 1956, Galleria Totti in Milan recognised his work with a solo exhibition. Together with Enrico Castellani and Piero Manzoni, with whom he organised several group exhibitions in Italy and Lausanne, he was inspired by Lucio Fontana's spatial experiments with the canvas.

Bonalumi continued Fontana's work and increasingly dispensed with the painterly element in his works in favour of a pronounced three-dimensionality. The resulting structured paintings, which often extend beyond the edges of the canvas, combine both sculptural and painterly qualities. The wires or wooden elements attached to the back of the works subvert the two-dimensionality, change the surface and create new rhythmic light effects through ‘extroflections’. Bonalumi took part in several biennials and numerous exhibitions worldwide. His works are exhibited in renowned galleries and museums. Agostino Bonalumi died of cancer on 18 September 2013 in Monza.
