Brandl, Herbert

Born in Graz in 1959, Herbert Brandl belongs to the generation of the Neue Wilden. He studied under Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1978 and was a visiting professor in Vienna from 1985 to 1991. From 2004 to 2019 he was professor at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf. Brandl lives and works in Vienna.
As early as the 1980s, Brandl devoted himself to a neo-expressive style that combines both abstract and representational elements in his works and engages the viewer with its sometimes striking use of colour. Mountains have been the predominant subject matter since 2000.Brandl has participated in major international art exhibitions such as the Biennale de Paris (1985), documenta IX (1992) and the Biennale di Venezia (2007). His works have been exhibited at venues including the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (Ghent), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Albertina (Vienna), Kunsthaus Bregenz, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Museo Serralves Porto, Kunsthalle Bern, Kunsthalle Zürich, and the Renaissance Society Chicago.
