STAUB, JOSEF

* 30.11.1931 Baar, † 2.11.2006 Schlieren

The Swiss sculptor and painter Josef Staub was born in Baar in 1931. He trained as a bricklayer and construction foreman, but his interest quickly turned to fine art and sculpture. He was mainly self-taught as an artist. In his early 20s he was already working mainly as a painter. Using a palette knife and impastoed paints, he created his powerful and harmonious non-representational compositions. After his first successful exhibition in Zug in 1956, he was twice awarded a federal art scholarship, in 1957 and 1959. His first exhibition in Zurich took place in 1959 at the Palette Gallery. The move to sculpture took place in the 1960s. He experimented with aluminium and bronze casting and was constantly on the lookout for ever smoother and shinier surfaces, until in the 1970s he discovered the material of chromium steel and made it his own. From then on, Josef Staub participated more and more frequently in sculpture exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad, and he received numerous commissions for art on building projects in the Swiss cantons of Zurich, Zug, Aargau, Solothurn and St. Gallen. In the 1970s and 1980s he was increasingly involved with international commissions in Spain, France, Italy and the USA.

In making his works of art, he did not focus on a mathematical-theoretical method, but worked empirically: first he made cardboard models, from which patterns were rotated, shaped and given a spatial arrangement. He then created the first plaster models, which consolidated his initial ideas. After numerous variations, he then finally transformed his result into chromium steel. Josef Staub died in Schlieren on 2 November 2006.
