Eisen- und Stahlplastiker, Zeichner.

Enkel eines aus Alano di Piave im Veneto eingewanderten Italieners, Sohn des Schmiedes Serafino Licini und der aus Sitten stammenden Caroline Licini-Jmfeld. 1952–55 Lehre als Schlosser, 1955–59 Arbeit als Eisenleger auf dem Bau, 1959– 1962 Anstellung als Kassen-, 1963 als Bauschlosser. Um 1960 intensives Boxtraining. 1961–63 mit der Fotografin Maja Burkhard verheiratet. In den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren von Hans Aeschbacher und Kurt Laurenz Metzler mehrmals als Fachkraft beigezogen. Als Plastiker Autodidakt. 1968 erste abstrakte Eisenplastiken. 1971 und 1972 Studienreisen in die USA, 1975 nach Spanien, seit 1987 mehrere Studienaufenthalte in Mexiko. 1972 und 1974 des Kantons Zürich, 1974 Eidgenössisches Kunststipendium. Einzelausstellungen 1995 in der Sammlung Dr. Hans Koenig, Zollikon, 1997 im Forum Kunst in Rottweil (D), 2004 im Kunstverein Frauenfeld und 2016 im Kunst(Zeug)Haus Rapperswil.

James Licini gehört seit den 1970er Jahren zu den wichtigsten Schweizer Eisenplastikern. Aufgrund seiner Schlosserausbildung sind Materialkenntnis und technische Perfektion Markenzeichen seiner Arbeiten. Das Frühwerk der Jahre 1968–1973 umfasst Assemblagen aus zusammengeschweissten Alteisenteilen, die an Arbeitsgeräte aus der Schlosserwerkstatt erinnern. Bei den anschliessenden, bis etwa 1982 entstehenden Plastiken lässt sich Licini von seiner früheren Arbeit als Kassenschlosser inspirieren und fertigt neben Stelen kompakte Kompositionen und ineinander verzahnte Blechhohlkörper. Gleichzeitig entstehen funktionslose, ironische Paraphrasen auf die Maschinenwelt. Die anthropomorphen und zoomorphen Anklänge in den Arbeiten um 1982–83 verstärken sich in der Übergangsphase zum späteren Werk: Die Stelen wandeln sich 1985–86 zu fragilen Gestalten und sind sichtbares Zeichen für die Suche des Künstlers um neue Ausdrucksformen.

Die Stahlplastiken ab 1986–87, zu denen Licini durch seine Arbeit auf dem Bau angeregt worden ist, nennt der Künstler schlicht Stahlbau. Diese Werke bestehen aus Doppel-T-Trägern, Winkeleisen und massiven Stahlplatten, die er direkt ab Fabrik bezieht. Aufgrund ihrer schlichten funktionalen Schönheit und des zeitgemäss verwendeten Materials sind diese Plastiken Ausdruck einer modernen Weltsicht, die Kunst und Industrie zu einer Symbiose verbindet. Die Stelen zeichnen sich durch immer geringere künstlerische Eingriffe in die schliesslich auf drei begrenzten, mit dem Schneidbrenner unterschiedlich abgelängten Träger und Winkeleisen aus, die im rechten Winkel zusammengeschraubt sind. In den Raumstrukturen mit quaderförmigem, asymmetrischem Aussehen werden die einzelnen Trägerteile und Winkeleisen ineinander verschachtelt, während die mit ihnen verwandten Formen aufgrund verschiedener zusammengeschweisster Träger zwei Breitansichten besitzen.

In der Gruppe der Installationen löst sich Licini von der Einzelstele und geht zur Gestaltung grösserer Räume über, indem er die einzig in der Ablängung eine Veränderung erfahrenden Stelen zentralsymmetrisch komponiert. Die Joes und Haken mit ihren horizontalen, abrupt wechselnden Richtungsverläufen sind aus massivem Vierkantstahl geschaffen, der mittels Lasertechnik aus dicken Stahlplatten herausgeschnitten und anschliessend zusammengeschweisst und geschliffen wurde. Auch die Würfelprogressionen – die erste konzeptuell entwickelte Werkgruppe – bestehen anfänglich noch aus zu- und übereinander gestellten massiven Stäben, die sich zu einem Kubus entwickeln. Seit 1996 verwendet Licini den Würfel als Modul. T-Träger und insbesondere mehrfach geknickte Hohlprofile verschiedener Masse werden zu Kuben oder in Verdoppelung oder Verdreifachung zu hochkant stehenden Quadern formiert. Licinis neuere Plastiken sind ausschliesslich vom rechten Winkel und Parallelverläufen geprägt; in seinem Werk strebt er nach grösstmöglicher Vereinfachung, nach einer nicht weiter reduzierbaren Urform, wie sie beispielsweise in Stahlbau PE 400 von 2013 zum Ausdruck kommt.
