BAKHUYZEN, GERALDINE JACOBA VAN DE SANDE
1826 The Hague 1895
The Dutch still life painter Gerardina Jacoba Van de Sande Bakhuyzen came from a family of artists and was the daughter and pupil of the well-known animal painter Henrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen (1795–1860). From childhood, Gerardina had devoted herself to painting flowers. What was initially considered by her father to be a common pastime for a little girl, revealed itself to be a special talent. She specialised in paintings of flowers and fruits, with which she enjoyed great success and received numerous awards. Her highly accomplished flower pieces were presented in numerous exhibitions in Germany and Austria in the 1870s and 1880s.
