Eugen von Blaas, born in Albano in 1843, came from a well-known Austrian family of painters. The early stages of his artistic career were largely influenced by his father, Carl von Blaas, a history and portrait painter. In later years, study trips took him to France, Holland, and Belgium, but he spent most of his life working in Italy.
Inspired by the hustle and bustle of the streets, his pictorial spaces are defined by a lively colour scheme, subtle tones, and figures with an almost sculptural quality. He thus found his distinctive and emotive style early on and combined this with a photographic realism, to create his characteristic compositions of lively everyday depictions of simple Venetian folk and portraits of rascals and young girls. His paintings are both narrative and playful, with the gaze of the sitter depicted as seductive, melancholic, demanding, cheeky or innocent.
It was above all his genre scenes of the Venetian bourgeoisie that met with great international acclaim. Far beyond the borders of Italy, his works enjoyed recognition and were presented in numerous exhibitions in Paris, Munich, Vienna, and Berlin, among other places. His fame continues to have an impact to this day, and his works command top prices on the international art market.
