CARABAIN, JACQUES

Amsterdam 1834–1933 Schaerbeek

Born in Amsterdam in 1834, Jacques François Joseph Carabain was particularly fond of town and village scenes as well as landscapes and river views, which he painted in a romantic realist style.
He received his basic art training at the Amsterdam Art Academy and studied under the figure and history painter Valentijn Bing (1812–1895). In particular, the careful placement of the figures in his compositions can be traced back to his training under Bing.
On his travels through Italy, France, Austria, and Germany, Carabain painted different coastal views of Italy and southern France with great enthusiasm. Around 1880, Carabain returned to his homeland and settled in Brussels, where he remained until the end of his life.
