GENISSON, JULES VICTOR

Sint-Omaars 1805–1860 Brügge

Jules Victor Genisson was born in Saint-Omer in 1805 and studied primarily at the Academy in Antwerp. Study trips took him to France, Italy, England, and Germany. It was Genisson's depictions of church interiors in particular that attracted most attention. However, he is also known for his history paintings, townscapes and portraits. His compositions are always compelling because of their confident lines, the finely worked details and the impressive incidence of light that the artist was able to translate onto the painted surface.
