Terheijden 1806–1870 Brüssel

Petrus van Schendel gilt als typischer Vertreter der romantischen Genremalerei, bei der bewusst der Augenschein auf Lichteffekte mit Helldunkel-Darstellungen gelegt wird. Nach 1828, als Schendel seine Ausbildung an der Antwerpener Akademie der Schönen Künste beendete, arbeitete er sehr intensiv, um sich seinen Lebensunterhalt als Künstler zu verdienen. In diesem Jahr entdeckte er auch seine persönliche Spezialisierung, bei der er sich auf Darstellungen bei Kerzenschein, Lampen- und Mondlicht konzentrierte.
