WAGNER, JAKOB

Gelterkinden 1861–1915 Weisslingen

Jakob Wagner, a native of Basel, learned the basics of the painter's craft at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In the years that followed, he honed his artistic skills under the supervision of his two teachers, Karl Knaupp (1837–1918) and Ludwig Herterich (1856–1908), at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After freeing himself from the constraints of academic painting and embracing his love of nature, it was during his travels to Italy in 1885–88 and 1891–94, and to Egypt in the following years, that Wagner finally achieved artistic fulfilment. His works from this period are captivating in their intensely colourful character and feature atmospheric landscapes flooded with light.
