ZIEM, FÉLIX

Beaune 1821–1911 Paris

Born in Beaune in 1821, Félix Ziem began his training by learning architectural drawing. While studying, he gradually developed a talent for painting, simply by observing and reproducing nature. When he was just 18, Ziem broke off his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. In search of new ideas, he decided to embark on a journey to Rome on foot. During this time, his passion for painting became his new vocation. He made hundreds of sketches of the numerous places he saw on his wanderings. However, there was hardly any other city that captivated him as much as Venice did. The many canals, which weave their way between the impressive buildings, most of which are in earth tones, reflect the light in a fascinating way and envelop the city in a sea of colours. He celebrated his debut at the Paris Salon in 1849 with great success and made a name for himself as the 'painter of Venice' at the Salon in the years that followed. Much acclaimed and the talk of the town, his reputation and skill are acknowledged to this day, and he continues to captivate the viewer with his interplay of light and colour.
