LÉPINE, STANISLAS

Caen 1835–1892 Paris

In the early stages of his career, Stanislas Lépine's work was clearly modelled on that of Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891). Born in Caen in 1836, the artist soon developed his own unmistakable style and focused his attention mainly on depictions of the Seine and the immediate surroundings.
Discreet colour tones as well as a fluid brushstroke and sometimes an almost varnish-like application of paint predominate in Lépine's compositions. This, together with his light palette, consisting mainly of extremely delicate shades of grey and green, ranks Lépine among the artists who paved the way for their successors, the Impressionists. The refined effect of the light and the contemplative mood were particularly appreciated by contemporary critics.
