Peter Somm was born in Sulgen in 1940. He studied medicine in Fribourg, Vienna and Zurich and then trained as an anaesthetist in Münsterlingen, Berlin, Zurich and St. Gallen. He practised as an anaesthetist until 1999.
Painting has always been a part of his life since he first began his studies. He attended painting courses in Berlin and Switzerland and trained as an autodidact. From 1958 to 1969 Somm created an extensive body of early work. However, he made no effort to exhibit these works, instead delving into the oeuvre of Paul Klee and Johannes Itten. He concentrated on developing a style of his own, characterised by a layered structural principle in continuous colour gradations and rectilinear bands, in a black-grey-white palette. In 1969, as part of the annual winter exhibition at the Helmhaus in Zurich, one of his acrylic paintings was accepted by the first-class jury headed by Max Bill, which enabled him to enter the art scene. In his circular paintings, which he began in 1971 and which were made to rotate, colour became increasingly important to Somm. The colour began to glow and vibrate, qualities that the artist pushed to an ever-greater intensity over the years and made the goal in each of his works. Somm's light pictures are usually based on three personal pictorial motifs: the cross, the circle and the horizon. In 1972 Peter Somm settled with his wife and three children in Herrenschwanden, where he still lives and works today.Works by this artist from our auctions
