Donald Sultan wird 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina geboren. Sein Vater war Reifenfabrikant, der in seiner Freizeit aber abstrakt malte, seine Mutter war eng mit dem Theater verbunden, wodurch Sultan sich früh für die Kreativ-Branche interessiert. Ermutigt durch seinen Vater entscheidet er sich jedoch für eine professionelle künstlerische Ausbildung und studiert bis 1973 an der University of North Carolina, 1975 schliesst er seinen Master am Art Institute of Chicago ab. Im selben Jahr folgt der Umzug nach New York, wo er bald eine Vollzeitstelle als Handwerker in einer Kunstgalerie bekommt. 4 Jahre später erhält Sultan ein Stipendium des New York State Council on the Arts in Höhe von 2500 Dollar, welches es ihm ermöglicht, sich ganz der Kunst zu widmen.

Bekannt wird er als Teil der „New Image“ Bewegung Ende der 70er durch seine wuchtig wirkenden Stillleben und Landschaften, welche abstrahierte Formen mit jedoch feinen Konturen in hellen Farben auf dunklen Hintergründen darstellen. Er reduziert seine Bildgegenstände, oft Früchte und Blumen, auf ihre blossen Umrisse und konturiert diese scharf.Schon während seines Studiums ist er einer der ersten, die anstelle von traditionellen Pinseln und Farben eine breite Palette von industriellen Werkzeugen und Materialien, insbesondere Teer, einsetzt. Sultans häufige Verwendung von Teer wurde durch das Reifengeschäft seines Vaters beeinflusst, und sein Interesse an der industriellen Welt rührt aus seinen Jahren am Art Institute of Chicago.

Sultan bewegt sich in seiner Kunst auf der Grenze des Abstrakten und Alltäglichen und kombiniert geometrische sowie organische Formen, wobei die Bildsprache zugleich monumental wie fragil wirkt. Der rohe Bildgrund, den Sultan als „something brutal and beginning“ bezeichnet, steht in spannungsvollem Gegensatz zu den fein ausgearbeiteten Bildflächen. Der Künstler entwickelt seine Arbeitsweise im Kontext der Process Art und der Pop Art, die in New York in den 70ern dominieren.Seine erste Einzelausstellung findet 1977 im Artist’s Space in New York statt, es folgen Ausstellungen in der Mary Boone Gallery und dem Whitney Museum of American Art. In den 80er Jahren beginnen namhafte Museen wie das MoMA, seine Arbeiten in ihre Sammlungen aufzunehmen; heute sind Sultans Werke im Met, dem Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokio, dem Londoner Tate Modern und vielen mehr vertreten. Er ist ebenso der bislang jüngste Künstler, der mit 37 Jahren im Museum of Modern Art in New York mit einer Einzelausstellung gewürdigt wurde. 2008 kommt unter dem Titel „Donald Sultan: The Theater of the Object“ eine Monografie über seine 30-jährige Künstlerkarriere heraus.
