Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot was a versatile painter known for his village scenes, landscapes, genre paintings, moral allegories and biblical scenes. His early works reflect the influence of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525–1569), Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1636), David Vinckboons (1576–1632) and Esaias van de Velde (1590–1630). He belongs to the tradition of Flemish landscape painting, especially village scenes, as developed by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, but his figures are more individualised and usually depicted in expressive poses.
